iPhone or Samsung Galaxy? How to Choose and Switch Without Losing Data

2 min read

It is the question we hear most in Westlands: iPhone or Samsung Galaxy? Both make excellent phones. The right one depends on how you live, work and what else you already own. Here is how to decide, and how to switch smoothly.

Think about your ecosystem first

Your phone does not live alone. It talks to your laptop, watch, earbuds and tablet.

  • Already on a MacBook, iPad or AirPods? An iPhone fits right in. AirDrop, copy and paste between devices and shared messages feel effortless.
  • On a Windows PC or Samsung devices? A Galaxy phone works nicely with Galaxy Buds, Galaxy Tab and Windows phone link features.

If you are starting fresh, think about which laptop or tablet you might buy next.

How you like your phone to feel

  • iPhone: simple, consistent and tidy. Settings are straightforward and apps tend to look the same across models.
  • Galaxy: more customisable. You can change layouts, defaults and features, and there are options like the S Pen on some models and foldables.

Neither is better; it is about personal taste. Hold both in store before deciding.

Cameras

Both brands make strong cameras at the top end. Broadly:

  • Look at zoom range if you shoot events, matches or wildlife.
  • Look at video features if you make content.
  • Compare night photos, which matter for evenings out in Nairobi.

Ask to see sample shots on the actual models you are considering.

Software updates

Both Apple and Samsung support their recent flagship phones with updates for several years. Before buying, check the current update policy for the exact model, especially for mid-range phones.

Storage: buy more than you think

Photos, videos and WhatsApp media pile up fast. If you shoot a lot of video, aim higher than the base storage. It is cheaper than running out in a year.

Switching from Android to iPhone

  1. Charge both phones and connect to Wi-Fi.
  2. During iPhone setup, choose to move data from Android.
  3. Install Apple's Move to iOS app on your old phone and follow the code prompts.
  4. For WhatsApp, follow WhatsApp's official chat transfer steps during setup.

Switching from iPhone to Galaxy

  1. Install Samsung Smart Switch, or use it on the new Galaxy during setup.
  2. Connect by cable or wirelessly and pick what to transfer.
  3. Turn off iMessage on the old iPhone so texts reach your new phone.
  4. Use WhatsApp's official transfer option for your chats.

Before you hand over the old phone

  • Back up everything and check it arrived on the new phone.
  • Sign out of your Apple ID or Google and Samsung accounts.
  • Remove your SIM and memory card.
  • Do a full factory reset.

Do not forget accessories

A good case, screen protector and the right fast charger keep a new phone in shape. Check which charger and cable your model supports before buying.
